Mosaic tiles are used have been used for centuries in architecture for floors, walls, and ceilings. They are to inspire and reflect the culture of the place. Materials vary depending – sometimes a mix of found and manufactured.
Assignment #1: Using paper tiles on prepared black paper create a mosaic based on an image of a water bug or bee (provided.)
Assignment #2: Create a mosaic using the glass tiles of bumble bee on a flower – images provided.
Steps in creating a paper mosaic design:
- Choose an image from the photographs provided. On a “to-scale” sheet of white paper create (contour lines) the image. Fill the foreground and background space with additional elements to balance off the composition. Simple clean composition is best.
- Grid off your drawing and redraw on black paper provided.
- Using the paper tiles provided complete your mosaic. Be sure to leave black in between all paper tiles.
Steps in creating a glass tiled mosaic:
- Choose an image from the photographs provided. On a “to-scale” sheet of white paper create (contour lines) the image. Fill the foreground and background space with additional elements to balance off the composition. Simple clean composition is best. Grid off art in 2″ squares.
- Grid off cement bard (which has been attached to a sheet of plywood) in 2″ squares. Redraw design.
- Demonstration. Prepare tiles in to fit shapes and lines from your design. Leave space between each tile. Glue down in small “patches” to complete 12″ square mosaic. Dry overnight.
- Demonstration. Add grout between glass tiles.
