Research in class search for answers for the following questions in your own words. 3 sources minimum.

Get to Know Your Bumble Bees (Dr. Elaine Evans)

Bumble Bees of Minnesota

  1. What is the bee collapse?
  2. What are the reasons being considered/proposed for causing the collapse?
  3. What are the affects of the collapse?’
  4. Why should we as humans be concerned?
  5. What is being proposed/done world wide to correct the problem?

Drawing in sketchbook: Complete three realistic drawings of bees – one from MN. Add the names (common and scientific) of your bees to the list on the white board. No duplicates.

  • Use pencil kits (HB-2B and 4B minimum) and blending sticks  to sketch>contour draw>shade
  • 6” in length
  • Work only from photograph (or life).

Silk screen: We are going to create a collective silk screened poster using everyones screened image as well as on sketchbook covers. As is the tradition of silk screen (printing) we will mass produce your images and create awareness and solutions to the problem.

Process in preparing a stencil image for silkscreen:

  • On tracing paper, over each of your bees, draw black and white line art with Sharpie marker. Keep lines tight, bold and solid black.
  • Leave areas that could be a solid color “open”. (We can “hand paint” those areas either before or after the silk screened prints are competed.)
  • Participate in class hand coloring, printing posters; preparing and cleaning of silk screens; and studio management.

Artist Statement: Due the day prints are completed/turned in – send an email to colson@isd2142.k12.mn.us with a brief written statement that includes your research findings, three sources and a discussion of your intentions in creating your stencil silkscreen image. Be sure to answer these questions:

  • What is the bee collapse?
  • What are the reasons being considered/proposed for causing the collapse?
  • What are the affects of the collapse?’
  • Why should we as humans be concerned?
  • What is being proposed/done world wide to correct the problem?
